Evolution Rally 🚗💨
A 48-hour solo Game Jam project about evolving your driving skills.

🏁 Overview
Evolution Rally is a small 3D rally racing game created for a 48-hour game jam with the theme “Evolution.” I participated solo as I did not know about my time commitments and I did not want that to sour someone else's experience. This was my first proper try at game development, I knew going in I wanted to build something to do with Rally racing, funnily the theme fits super nicely, as to get better on a track or a map especially with rallying you have to adapt to it, grow around it; "Evolve" to it.
The idea behind the game is that as you complete laps, your car quietly becomes a little easier to handle. Steering gets smoother, accuracy improves, and the vehicle feels more in tune with you. The goal is to subtly trick the brain into feeling, “Hey, I’m actually getting better at this!” while the game is helping you evolve behind the scenes.
Update: So yeah I scrapped that idea and gave people the option to choose what they want to upgrade.
My reasoning for doing this was that I wanted the player to get a chance to have that feeling without putting in so much time, because it is a GameJam with hella people.
To keep things manageable in such a short timeframe, I’m aimed for a low-poly 3D style and just one or two small tracks—possibly even reusing a single track by flipping it or changing the layout.
Core Concept
Evolution Through Gameplay
After each completed lap:
- Handling improves
- Steering responsiveness increases
- Vehicle control becomes easier
- The player feels like they are naturally evolving as a driver
This lap-to-lap improvement builds the illusion of experiential growth—even though some of it is cleverly assisted by the game.
Tracks
- Planned: 1–2 tracks
- If time is tight:
- Reverse the same track
- Switch start/end points
- Make light adjustments for variety
Style & Scope
- Low-poly 3D
- Simple, clean shapes
- Minimal textures
- Focus on driving feel over visual realism
Tools & Engine
- Godot Engine
- Kenney’s Car Kit for placeholder models
- (Optional) Blender for simple edits and track making
